Just to build on my previous comment. So many new comers to yoga are shallow breathers, that is only breathing in and out from their lungs. I am thinking a teacher would first want to encourage abdominal breathing to engage the diaphragm and that Ujjayi would be an advanced technique only introduced to advance practioners?

I am confused about the Ujjayi technique. We are supposed to keep the belly still, so does this mean we are only breathing in and out from the lungs? That is, we do not begin the breath in the abdomen and there is no abdominal breathing taking place? I know Ujjayi is practiced during asana and meditation as in abdominal breathing but I am not clear when to use one versus the other?

So lovely. The sound of the song birds in spring is so joyous and welcoming. This must be Ottawa!

Thankyou for this beautiful reprogramming practice. I shall be practicing more like this. I loved the setting in the Ottawa Arboretum, I am guessing it was recorded during the late spring or early summer by the sound of the gorgeous bird songs. Just what I needed to hear now during the long months of Ottawa winters.
